Dr. Thomas C. Bower consultant in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Dakota in 1978 and received his medical degree at Baylor University in 1982 with high honors. His general and vascular surgery training were done at Mayo Clinic, during which time he received a number of honors. He joined the Division of Vascular Surgery faculty in 1989. He served as Program Director from 1997-2010, and Chair of the Division, from 2010-2018. He was elected to the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Hall of Fame in 2012 and received the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician Award in November 2018.
He has trained nearly 100 fellows and residents, published over 245 peer-reviewed articles and 64 book chapters, and given over 300 invited presentations.
He is a distinguished fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), has served on its Strategic Board and Executive Council, and was President of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery (SCVS) in 2015-2016. He is a member of the American Surgical Association.
His clinical interests include surgical treatment of complex aortic diseases, open mesenteric and renal artery reconstructions, vena cava graft replacement and major vascular reconstructions for malignancy, and carotid body tumors. He has performed over 9,500 open operations, over 3100 being aortic reconstructions.
He is an avid outdoorsman, has been happily married for 42 years, and has four children and three grandchildren.
