Shireen Fikree is a third year medical student at the University of Toronto with a Master of Science in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. She is currently leading a retrospective cohort study at Toronto General Hospital investigating sex-based disparities in abdominal aortic aneurysm outcomes in women, analyzing Vascular Quality Initiative registry data to evaluate earlier intervention versus guideline-based repair. Her research aims to identify opportunities for earlier AAA treatment in underrepresented patient populations - groups that have historically not been adequately addressed by current treatment guidelines, with the goal of improving long-term outcomes and advancing more inclusive vascular care.
Shireen has also co-led a review on diabetic foot complications, consolidating patient perspectives on the barriers and facilitators to effective limb preservation, and emphasizing the importance of access to care and community support. This work was recently presented at the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery Annual Meeting.
In addition to her research, Shireen serves as the Social Media and Communications Co-Lead for the International Society for Women Vascular Surgeons, where she supports community-building and knowledge sharing among trainees and faculty. She has also co-led the University of Toronto’s Vascular Surgery Interest Group, organizing educational events and hands-on workshops for medical students, with the goal of introducing them to the field early in their training.
